Challenger Refit Notes

For those familiar with the Constitution-class starships, and other derived Class One spacecraft, please note the following changes made to this vessel as part of the 2265 minor refit and upgrade.

Primary Hull

  • The forward photon torpedo tubes have been lifted by two meters, improving maintenance access to them and the forward-ventral phaser bank directly below them. This has required re-routing the primary fire control data cables.
  • Bathrooms added to junior officer / petty officer quarters. These units are shared with a neighbor but an improved to the per-section group showers/restrooms previous used.
  • Primary food synthesizer capacity has been increased by adding a new protein sequencer and larger ingredient storage tanks, allowing for faster response times at food slots during high-traffic periods.
  • Additional radiation shielding added to high-energy physics lab following complaints regarding tetryon particle scattering affecting the rec deck during experiments.
  • Sickbay was remodeled to move the overflow ward onto the same deck as the primary ward, intensive care unit, and surgical bay.
  • Holographic simulator upgraded to version 5.9.7b, which includes the addition of overhead sprinklers to simulate weather and an improved tactile physics engine that increases the texture resolution on moveable objects. Bugs with character voice lip-synching and accurate audio projection were eliminated from most humanoid models.
  • Gangway docking bridges replaced with new Model 17 'Skywalk' units with increased vertical flex range. These also incorporate an improved emergency disconnect in response to an incident aboard USS ENTERPRISE in 2260.

Secondary Hull

  • An additional personnel transporter has been added by moving the existing cargo unit down to Deck 22.
  • Safety grating has been installed in engineering between the primary operations room and the plasma manifold compartment following complaints about inadequate railing.
  • Increased coolant efficiency has allowed two of the ten plasma manifold units to be removed, creating more space in the engineering hull for backup power junctions and an expanded shuttle fabrication facility.
  • The Matter-Antimatter Reaction Assembly (warp core) received several midlife upgrades, including easier access to the dilithium frame, an expanded intermix chamber, a new backup plasma venting system, and a more reliable ejection hatch release system.
  • Deuterium storage expanded by four percent thanks to improvements in compartment insulation and pumping mechanism.
  • Hangar floor lowered by fifty centimeters to accommodate an overhead crane with better ergonomics.
